"Loving You"

One story is that in January 1957 Elvis Presley shot one or more musical numbers on the stage at the Ivar Theatre in Hollywood for "Loving You" (Paramount, July 1957). It could be true but we don't seem to see any of the Ivar in the completed film. We do see bits and pieces of three different theatre interiors and none of them looks anything like the Ivar.

This is the first theatre space we get. -- with just a bit of the proscenium showing in this shot.

A bit more plaster visible in this view with Wendell Corey and Lisabeth Scott.

A look off right with Lisabeth and Wendell joined by Dolores Hart. Hal Kanter directed. The cinematography was by Walter Scharf.

Looking out into the house with a view of the side wall.

An enthusiastic patron. This venue could have been on the Paramount lot. Wherever it was, there's no resemblance to the Ivar.

A backlot exterior for the Grand Theatre in Amarillo.

Awaiting the arrival of Elvis.

Dolores backstage in this second space with James Gleason. This one is a bit fancier. Again, no resemblance to the Ivar.

Doing the number at the Grand.

A peek at the seats.

Another offstage right view.

Another backlot exterior, this time for the Civic Hall in Freegate, Texas. Elvis arrives in his new car.

Wendell and Elvis having a squabble in whatever space was used for Freegate's Civic Hall. Perhaps at Paramount.

The crowd watches as he drives off.  Will he perform? The show is to be the next day.

Just down the "street" we see the facade used for the Grand in Amarillo, now with different neon.

Backstage negotiations.

Getting ready. Yes, this one will be televised. But Lisabeth still has to use her wiles to bring Elvis back.

They stall. The audience is placated with interviews and filler.

A young lady saying the salacious stories aren't true -- she forced herself on Elvis.

He's back and starting his number.

Happy young girls and disapproving older townsfolk.

Elvis on one of the runways.

Dancing in the aisle at "Civic Hall." Note the 1920s vintage end standards used in this space.

Heading back onstage.

Backstage congratulations.

Yes, there have been problems. But we have a happy ending. Former spouses Wendell and Lisabeth are together again and Elvis will run off with Dolores Hart.

Although not seen in this film, you might want to check out the page on the Los Angeles Theatres website about the Ivar Theatre. It's located at 1605 Ivar Ave. in Hollywood.
