"Accidents Will Happen"
We get a drive east on Hollywood Blvd. with a quick glimpse of the construction site of the Egyptian Theatre at 5:14 into "Accidents Will Happen" (Universal, August 1922). William Watson directed the 17 minute film starring Neely Edwards and Bert Roach.
The building on the far right of the image is on the corner of McCadden Place and Hollywood Blvd., now the home of Pig 'N Whistle. The void beyond with the construction fence is the Egyptian's location at 6712 Hollywood Blvd. See the Los Angeles Theatres pages on the Egyptian Theatre for more about the building. It opened October 18, 1922.
Famed silent film detective John Bengtson spotted the shot. Keep up with his latest investigations on the terrific Silent Locations blog "Chaplin-Keaton-Lloyd film locations (and more)." He discovered that the full film (with German intertitles) can be seen on Vimeo and adds:
"There are many other great early local shots in Hollywood. At 1:00 he makes a left turn south onto Highland, and continues south across Hollywood Blvd., matching scenes from Buster Keaton’s 'The Goat.' The big palm tree on the right corner is the former Hollywood Hotel. 1:18 shows Cunard Investment at 7058 Hollywood Blvd, it appears several times. 2:45 looks east down Hollywood from Highland, 3:10 east at the Mary Moll Building and Masonic Temple, 3:15 the Garden Court parking garage (half still stands). 5:27 travels west from Shaefer’s Battery at 6606 Hollywood Blvd, towards Cherokee, and 5:42 travels west to the Busy Corner Drug Store at the corner of Las Palmas. 6:16 is a brief shot I can’t identify, but given the trolley tracks likely on Hollywood Blvd. too."
Thanks, John!
