"The Farmer's Daughter"

The Wilshire Ebell Theatre, 4400 Wilshire Blvd., is seen in "The Farmer's Daughter" (RKO, 1947). Here at the rear of the auditorium we've just walked into a political rally in Capitol City in some unnamed midwestern state.

Loretta Young, a girl with Swedish roots, has come to the big city to become a nurse. She's temporarily taken a job as a maid at the home of politician Joseph Cotten and his mother Ethyl Barrymore. When Young questions the integrity of one of Cotten's associates he suggests coming to the rally to ask the guy some questions in person. She does that and it's what starts a series of events culminating in her election to congress. And, of course, her marriage to the character Cotten is playing.

H.C. Potter directed. The cast also features Charles Bickford, Rose Hobart, Rhys Williams and Harry Davenport. More shots from the scene at the Ebell:

See the page about the Wilshire Ebell Theatre on the Los Angeles Theatres site for a history of the building and many photos.
