"Up In Smoke"

Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong pick up two ladies (Wally Ann Wharton and Zane Buzby) on the highway in "Up In Smoke" (Paramount, 1978). Toward the end of the film they're driving up from Mexico in a truck supposedly made of marijuana. Yes. Lou Adler directed the film which also features Stacy Keach, Strother Martin and Edie Adams.

We get this shot in front of the Chinese (running "Star Wars") just before the truck comes along. They're headed for the Roxy on Sunset Strip so they can play a gig. Across the street it's the El Capitan, here still in its Paramount days.

The green truck. In this shot there's a bit of the Paramount vertical on the far left.

See the pages on the Los Angeles Theatres site for a history of Grauman's Chinese and the El Capitan Theatre along with many photos.

On IMDb: "Up In Smoke"

In the film they just drive on by the Chinese. But evidently they stopped in for a promo shot.  Thanks to Rick Watts for finding the photo for a post on the Photos of Los Angeles Facebook page. "Up In Smoke" didn't play the Chinese.
