Grauman's Chinese makes an appearance in "Black Starlet" (Omni Pictures, 1974). Thanks to Eitan Alexander for this screenshot. He was in his Hockney period trying to capture the film's pan down from the top of the pagoda to the street. At the time of the shoot they were running "The Last Detail."
"They set a high price for stardom...was it worth it?" Juanita Brown is the starlet of the title. Chris Munger directed the film, which also features Eric Mason and Rockne Tarkington. For a VHS release it was titled "Black Gauntlet."
Eitan watches all the best films. He comments about this one: "The film seems fairly obscure. I only heard about it from the 'Every 70s
Movie' blog. Their review mentioned it was supposed to take place in
Hollywood and I hoped there would be some good location footage. It turned out that part of the beginning of the film was shot in Los Feliz on Melbourne, just before Vermont. There was also some location filming in Echo Park, Hollywood, and at that Jaguar dealership at Sunset and Doheny with Schwab's in the background. There weren't any other movie theaters though."
See the pages about the Grauman's Chinese Theatre on the Los Angeles Theatres site for the history of this Hollywood landmark along with hundreds of photos.
