"Hollywood Canteen"

A look west toward Hollywood and Vine from "Hollywood Canteen" (Warner Bros., 1944). On the lower left there's a banner out for the Hitching Post Theatre at 6262 Hollywood Blvd. Across the street the Pantages was running "Secret Command," a July 1944 release with Pat O'Brien and Carole Landis.

A view of the Canteen we see a bit later as our guys on leave figure out where to go for food and fun. This shot looks like the real thing. All of the interiors and most of the exteriors were done on the Warner lot. Joan Leslie, Bette Davis, John Garfield, the Andrews Sisters and dozens of other stars appear in the film. Delmer Daves wrote the screenplay and directed. The cinematography was by Bert Glennon.

See the pages about the Hollywood Canteen, the Pantages and the Hitching Post Theatre on the Los Angeles Theatres site for more data about these venues as well as many photos.

The action in front of the Warner Hollywood for the opening of the film. The photo made an appearance in a post for the private Facebook group Photos of Los Angeles, where Ken McIntyre credited it to the Hollywood Canteen Facebook page. It also can be seen on the website of the Bruce Torrence Historic Hollywood Photographs collection, their item #HC-149.
