L.A. cop Kurt Russell got framed, sentenced, and is on the lam when he heads to the Cleopatra Club in "Tango & Cash" (Warner Bros., 1989). He's looking for someone who can help him. All he knows is that she's named Catherine.
When we see the wall treatment behind Kurt it's evident that it's not some soundstage nightclub.
With this shot toward the stage it's evident that this is the lobby of the Pantages Theatre, 6233 Hollywood Blvd. That circular stage is covering the round Pacific Theatres snackbar that was in the middle of the lobby at the time.
A look to the ceiling. The Catherine he's looking for, played by Teri Hatcher, is this dancer who goes by Kiki. It turns out she's fellow cop Sylvester Stallone's sister.
The film was directed by Andrey Konchalovskiy and Albert Magnoli. Also starring are Jack Palance, James Hong, Brion James, Philip Tan, Susan Krebs and Michael J. Pollard. The cinematography was by Donald E. Thorin. The production designer was J. Michael Riva. The film also makes great use of the Park Plaza Hotel near MacArthur Park.
A view from the east stairs.
Another shot from a bit higher on the stairs to the balcony.
See the pages about the Hollywood Pantages on the Los Angeles Theatres site for historical information about the building and many, many photos.
