"Vice Squad"

During the titles for "Vice Squad" (United Artists, 1953) we look under the marquee of the Belmont Theatre, 126 S. Vermont Ave. Thanks to Claudia Mullins for spotting the theatre and getting the screenshots.

It's about a day in the life of a tough cop, Edward G. Robinson, a guy used to bending the rules a bit to get the job done. The day includes the killing of a policeman by Edward Binns and Lee Van Cleef, guys who are planning a bank robbery. We encounter Paulette Goddard running an "escort service." Also featured are K.T. Stevens, Porter Hall and Adam Williams. Arnold Laven Directed. The cinematographer was Joseph F. Biroc.

Another look at the Belmont. The theatre was still running at the time of the shoot but they've blacked out the marquee.

William Boyett plays an unlucky cop. Here he's in front of the jewelry store in the south storefront of the theatre building.

See the page about the Belmont Theatre on the Los Angeles Theatres site for some history and many photos. The theatre, a 1926 design by Lewis A. Smith, was demolished in 1973 after a fire that year.
