"The Effects of Magic"

We begin "The Effects of Magic" (Cricket Releasing, 1998) with a look at two kids hanging out at the pinrail offstage left at the Ivar Theatre in Hollywood. The Ivar shots in the film are decades in the past. The guy is now grown up and has turned into Robert Carradine, a magician as well as the owner of a costume business. His story is told to us by Kathy Bates, the voice of a talking magic bunny who assists Robert and his estranged father in keeping the secrets of magic from an evil guy.

A look downstage left at Melinda Dillon -- and part of a false proscenium built at the Ivar for the film. Melinda plays Robert's mother, formerly an assistant to her husband (and Robert's father), played by Jacobo Morales.

Also featured are Guillermo Diaz, Peter Dennis, Cynthia Ettinger, Kristin Minter and David Carradine. Chuck Martinez directed. The cinematography was by Stephen Ramsey. Thanks to former Ivar Theatre manager David Carlton for the information about the use of the theatre in this film. Visit his site: IvarTheatreHistory.com

You've heard of sister acts? This is the Siamese Sister act, part of the show in the theatre where Roberts parents were performing.

Our grown-up protagonist, imagining himself watching from off-left twenty years earlier.

 More of the twins.

Another view across the footlights. The false proscenium built for this film is also seen in "The Big Lebowski" (1998).

Robert imagines himself there doing chores.
