"Gangster Squad"

The Tower is Club Figaro in "The Gangster Squad" (Warner Bros, 2013) with Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn and Emma Stone. It's about the LAPD vs. east coast crime figures in the 40s. The photo, from Warner Bros., appeared in "Los Angeles on view in 'Gangster Squad'," a L.A. Times article about the film's locations.

The Tower's proscenium appears behind Emma Stone at the Club Figaro. The still from Warner Bros. is featured in"Taking Potshots at Fact..," a Backstage.com post about the movie. The draperies and chandeliers were added for the film.

A look at a scene being shot for in front of the Chinese Theatre in December 2011. Thanks to Martin Pal for putting it on Noirish Los Angeles. A bit more of the "Gangster Squad" shoot that evening appears on You Tube. The scenes at the Chinese were later deleted from the film and a new ending shot prior to release.

A forecourt scene from an early version of the trailer. For "Gangster Squad"  scenes were filmed at the Chinese involving gunmen behind the screen spraying the audience with machine gun fire. The scene was cut and did not appear in the film as released -- we got a new finale shot in Chinatown instead.

An auditorium shot from the trailer -- deleted from the film.

See the pages for the Tower Theatre and Grauman's Chinese for the history and many photos of the two theatres.
