"The Benny Goodman Story"

In Universal-International's "The Benny Goodman Story" from 1956 we get some shots inside the United Artists Theatre, 933 S. Broadway. Here's Steve Allen as Benny Goodman rising up on the pit lift with his band. The film was directed by Valentine Davies.

Trivia Question: How many other Los Angeles movie palaces had orchestra pit lifts?

A look into the house with a chance to check out the plasterwork on the front of the now-vanished mezzanine. It was removed for the TODD-AO renovations in late 1955.

Here the lift is fully up with more of the organ grille area visible. People are actually sitting in the mezzanine.

An usher holds back the enthusiastic crowd in the lobby.

Donna Reed runs down the aisle of the United Artists.

See the Los Angeles Theatres pages on the United Artists Theatre for a history of the 1927 vintage movie palace along with hundreds of photos.
