"Barton Fink"

John Turturro, as a Clifford Odets type socially concerned playwright, watching his play from the wings at the beginning of Joel and Ethan Coen's "Barton Fink" (20th Century Fox, 1991).We're supposed to be at the Belasco in New York City but the scene was shot in Los Angeles at the Orpheum Theatre, 842 S. Broadway.

A stagehand at the Orpheum's lockrail. See the Los Angeles Theatres pages about the Orpheum Theatre for a history of this 1926 vintage vaudeville house along with several hundred photos.

Turturro moves to Los Angeles to work as a screenwriter. Here he's just arrived in town and has entered the Hotel Earle ("A Day or a Lifetime"). The scene was shot at the Wiltern Theatre, 3790 Wilshire Blvd. We're looking along the lobby at the rear of the main floor from the rotunda. The lighted entrance door at the end of the lobby is a set piece added for the film.

Ready to check in. Steve Buscemi plays the desk clerk. See the Los Angeles Theatres pages about the Wiltern Theatre for many photos of different areas of this art deco gem.  No, the lobby isn't normally filled with tropical plants.
