"In Search of a Midnight Kiss"

Scoot McNairy and Sara Simmonds meet via a Craigslist ad in Alex Holdridge's "In Search of a Midnight Kiss" (IFC First Take, 2008). They hop a train to downtown and wander Spring St. When they get to Broadway, there are quick shots of almost all the theatres on the street. We get this look skyward in the 500 block. See the pages about the Roxie Theatre on the Los Angeles Theatres site.

There's also another couple in the film, played by Brian McGuire and Kathleen Luong. Also featured are Robert Murphy, Twink Caplan, Bret Roberts, Stephanie Feury, Bruce Jay and Julie Levin-Pierangeli. The cinematography was by Robert Murphy. The theatrical release was in lovely black and white. The DVD is in color.

A shot of the marquee at the Cameo Theatre, 528 S. Broadway. That's the Arcade Theatre just beyond at 534 S. Broadway. We're looking south toward 6th.

As the meandering couple heads south there's this look back toward 7th St. with views of the State Theatre and the signage of the Los Angeles Theatre, in the 600 block.

Another view of the State, 7th and Broadway.

The Globe Theatre, 744 S. Broadway. At the time of the filming the lobby areas were used for retail and the nightclub in the auditorium was entered via the alley.

A look up at 8th and Broadway with the Hamburger/May Company building on the left and the Merritt Building in the center. On the right it's the Chapman Building and the vertical of the Tower Theatre.

A shot of the 8th St. side of the Tower.

A wider 8th St. view.

A pigeon flying out of the south clock face.

They walk south from the Tower and approach the Rialto Theatre, 812 S. Broadway. In a scene that didn't make the finished film, Sara comments that although the theatre was closed the marquee was still there and they were hanging clothes on it. She adds that the Broadway theatres had just become big clothes closets.

This copy on the marquee advertising the 1952 Esther Williams film "La Sirena de Millon Dolares" ("Million Dollar Mermaid") appears in several films. It was put up for "The Mambo Kings" (Warner Bros., 1992).

A look back toward the Rialto and Tower as Scoot and Sara head down the block.

Heading farther south on the 800 block toward the Orpheum, 842 S. Broadway.

The obligatory roof sign shot.

Scoot knows someone there so they'll try to get in.

Talking to a staffer.

Check out the pages about the Orpheum on the Los Angeles Theatres site. It's a 1926 vaudeville theatre now going strong as a concert venue.

They go inside but with this first shot it's obvious we're not in the Orpheum. The theatre is the Million Dollar, 3rd and Broadway. This chandelier is in the center of the balcony lobby.

Heading out the center vomitory.

A shot toward the Million Dollar's ceiling.

Looking down on the couple.

Another ceiling shot.

They do go down onto the Million Dollar's stage but then we get several shots thrown into the mix, such as this one, done at some other theatre.

Another shot of Sara onstage at this mystery theatre.

Scoot near what looks like proscenium plasterwork, but obviously not at the Million Dollar.

Scoot checks out the rigging off right at this mystery theatre. The sequence concludes with a shot looking down from the Million Dollar's balcony with the couple seen onstage.

See the pages about the Million Dollar Theatre on the Los Angeles Theatres site for a history of this 1918 vintage movie palace along with many photos.

When they exit the theatre they've been touring we get a walk on 8th St. from Broadway toward Hill St. Across the street it's the Olympic Theatre, 313 W. 8th St.

Another shot closer to Hill St.

Down on Olympic Blvd. looking at the side of the Mayan Theatre, 1038 S. Hill St.

The Mayan's roof sign.

Back on Broadway looking toward the United Artists Theatre, 933 S. Broadway.

A UA entrance view. It was still in use as a church at the time of the filming.

We don't see them walking up Bunker Hill but there's this shot of Disney Hall, 111 S. Grand Ave.

When it's time to get on the train back toward Hollywood we get this view from the hills toward the signage of the El Capitan Theatre, 6838 Hollywood Blvd.

A look at the Pantages Theatre as Scoot and Sara come out of the Hollywood and Vine Metro station.
