Mel Gibson plays a New York City cab driver with some mental problems in "Conspiracy Theory" (Warner Bros., 1997). We get a wild scene with lots of erratic driving at the beginning of the film when he has a traumatic flashback. One of the shots includes this view of the marquee of the former Warner Downtown Theatre at 7th & Hill.
Julia Roberts plays an investigator who seems to be the only person Mel can communicate with. He's obsessed with multiple conspiracy theories and
when one of them turns out to be true, he's a target. The film was directed by Richard Donner and also features Patrick Stewart. The cinematography was by John Schwartzman.
He's being chased on a New York street by a team from an unknown agency. In the background we get a look at the marquee of the Orpheum Theatre, 842 S. Broadway.
A wider street view. Note the fake Con Ed steam pipe to the right of the marquee to give it that authentic New York look.
Under the Orpheum marquee. That's the May Co. across the street.
Hurredly buying a ticket.
Mel at the back of the main floor.
Bad news. They guys chasing him come into the lobby.
One of the agency guys looking for Mel.
In the side aisle. Mel eludes them and escapes out an exit into the alley.
See the pages about the Warner Downtown and the Orpheum Theatre on the Los Angeles Theatres site for a history of these show places and many, many photos.
