"Footlight Serenade"

Betty Grable and John Payne go see a sappy western called "High on a Western Hill" in Gregory Ratoff's "Footlight Serenade" (20th Century Fox, 1942). This composite shot is designed to evoke the Roxy in New York but it's not quite an image of the actual proscenium. Thanks to Kurt Wahlner for the screenshot.

The film also features Victor Mature, Jane Wyman, James Gleason, Phil Silvers, June Lang and Cobina Wright. The cinematography was by Lee Garmes.

When they come out of the show the happy couple decides to get married and we get this shot of them running down from the balcony promenade at the Pantages Theatre.

Descending to the house left mezzanine lounge area at the Pantages. That's the main lobby in view off to the left. Thanks to Christopher McPherson for sharing the two Pantages shots in a post on the Los Angeles Theatres Facebook page.

See the pages about the Pantages Theatre on the Los Angeles Theatres website for hundreds of photos of the building.
