Tobey Maguire goes to see "Manhattan Memories," a show at New York's Broadhurst Theatre that his girlfriend, Kirsten Dunst, is appearing in during "Spider-Man 3" (Columbia/Sony, 2007). Kirsten's character is named Mary Jane Watson.
Sam Raimi directed. The cinematography was by Bill Pope. The film also features James Franco, Rosemary Harris, Topher Grace, Bryce Dallas Howard, Thomas Hayden Church, J.K. Simmons, James Cromwell, Willem Dafoe, Theresa Russell and Bill Nunn.
Tobey goes looking for his seat.
As he sits down we get a glimpse of the sidewall and know that for the interior of the theatre they used the Orpheum in downtown Los Angeles. Thanks to Lindsay Blake for noting the film's use of the Orpheum.
Kirsten comes down the stairs singing "They Say It's Wonderful," an Irving Berlin song that was introduced by Ethel Merman in "Annie Get Your Gun" in 1946.
During the show we pan across to this side wall view and then up to the boxes.
James Franco is up in one of the boxes, wishing bad things on Maguire.
Tobey backstage congratulating Kirsten. We're looking across toward stage left. In actuality there isn't a dressing room at this particular location.
Another shot with a bit of the auditorium on the right.
Tobey, of course, loves the show. The New York Times thinks Kirsten has a weak voice. Here she's heading to the theatre the next afternoon.
At the back of the auditorium she sees a rehearsal is in progress.
Her replacement, Jessi Collins, is practicing the big number.
"We tried to reach you," the director says. She asks "One bad review?" and the director says "All the reviews. We could say that you fell ill." Tim Maculan and Mark Vann are the director and producer.
Leaving the theatre, Kirsten walks out onto 44th St. She hears applause and momentarily thinks it's for her. But it's for an acrobat doing a Spider Man show above the street as part of an event to honor Tobey. That's the Helen Hayes Theatre across the street and the Broadhurst on the right.
Pasting the name of Kirsten's replacement on the marquee.
See the pages about the Orpheum Theatre on the Los Angeles Theatres site for more about this 1926 vintage vaudeville house.
On IMDb: "Spider-Man 3"
Kirsten also had some theatre scenes in "Spider-Man 2" (2004). Those used the Ivar Theatre in Hollywood. See the Theatres in Movies post about that one.
