"The Loved One"

We're at Hollywood and Vine with Robert Morse and Anjanette Comer in a sequence that begins 1:41 into "The Loved One" (MGM, 1965). Tony Richardson directed, based on the Evelyn Waugh novel. The film also features Jonathan Winters, Rod Steiger, Dana Andrews, Milton Berle, James Coburn, John Gielgud, Tab Hunter and Margaret Leighton. Haskell Wexler was the cinematographer.

Many thanks to Sean Ault for spotting the various theatres seen in the film and providing these screenshots.

Anjanette is trying to get away from Robert and drives east. Robert runs back to his van, a loner from the Happy Hunting Ground pet cemetary where he works.

As Anjanette pulls away we look back toward Robert and his van. The Admiral/Vine Theatre at 6321 Hollywood Blvd. is just to the right of that car in the center of the frame but it's a late night shoot and the marquee is dark. Note the Christmas decorations. The film was shot in November and December 1964.

The geography then gets a bit scrambled at this point as we're still driving east but this next shot has us looking back across Las Palmas, quite a bit farther west. The Egyptian is on the left at 6712 Hollywood Blvd. but dark at the time of the shoot. The vertical beyond is for the Hollywood Inn, the former Christie Hotel that's now a Scientology building.

We're still driving east and catch the Vogue Theatre at 6675 Hollywood Blvd. in the background of this shot.

Another shot across the street from the Vogue. She heads to the hills to try to elude Robert.

See the pages about the Vine Theatre, the Egyptian Theatre and the Vogue Theatre on the Los Angeles Theatres site for a history of these Hollywood film houses along with many, many photos.

Anjanette ends up downtown running on the east side of Broadway in a sequence beginning about 1:47 into the film. Here we get a reflection in a store window of the marquee at the Los Angeles Theatre, 615 S. Broadway. They were running "Roustabout" with Elvis Presley.

A rapid run by the Palace at 630 S. Broadway. We also get some shots on Main St. She ends up at the home of her boss at the Whispering Glades cemetery, Jonathan Winters. She's looking for consolation and advice and instead gets sexual harassment. In despair and confusion, she heads back to Whispering Glades for solace.

The pages about the Los Angeles Theatre and Palace Theatre on the Los Angeles Theatres site will give you a history of these two Broadway show houses.
