"Voice in the Mirror"

A view on Main St. during the filming of Harry Keller's "Voice in the Mirror" with Julie London and Walter Matthau (Universal-International, 1958). The photo appears on page 31 of the Arcadia Publishing book "Location Filming in Los Angeles" by Karie Bible, Marc Wanamaker and Harry Medved. Thanks to Ken McIntyre for spotting the photo for a post of on the Photos of Los Angeles Facebook page.

Across the street the Burbank, 548 S. Main, is advertising "Patti Waggin And Her Educated Torso" as their featured attraction. The theatre opened in 1893 and in its final decades was a burlesque house. See the Burbank Theatre page on the Los Angeles Theatres site for some history as well as photos of Patti Waggin and several ads promoting her appearance at the theatre. The Burbank was demolished in 1974. We don't see the theatre in the finished film.

The Star Theatre at 529 S. Main makes a brief appearance about an hour and ten minutes into the film. Thanks to Jack Tillmany for the tip on this one.  The assumption is that it was closed at the time and spruced up for the filming.

Richard Egan, Arthur O'Connell and others coming out of the theatre. Egan plays Julie London's alcoholic husband who eventually forms a group similar to AA.

Walking south on Main. The film is actually in CinemaScope. These screenshots were taken from a pan-and-scan TV version of the film.

See the page about the Star Theatre on the Los Angeles Theatres site for many photos.

"The Swinger"

We get a look at the Art Theatre, 551 S. Main St., in "The Swinger" (Paramount, 1966). It's part of a little travelogue near the beginning of the movie showing brief views of many of the high culture spots in Los Angeles. The film stars Ann-Margret and Tony Franciosa. She's a journalist posing as a swinger to get magazine editor Tony to publish a story she wrote while his goal is to get her to pose for the centerfold instead.

A look at the Banner Theatre, 458 S. Main St., from the beginning of the film. Thanks to Nathan Marsak on Noirish Los Angeles for this screenshot. He included it with several other shots from the film on his Noirish post #50768.

A view of the Banner's boxoffice.

One end of the marquee of the Optic Theatre, 533 S. Main St.

A peek at the marquee of the Paris Theatre, 8163 Santa Monica Blvd. In pre-porno days it had been called the Carmel Theatre.

The closed Star Theatre, 529 S. Main St.

The marquee of the Vista Theatre, 4473 Sunset Dr., in its porno days.

See the Los Angeles Theatres pages on the Art Theatre, the Banner Theatre, the Optic Theatre, the Paris/Carmel Theatre, the Star Theatre and the Vista Theatre for more about the buildings. Sad to say that of the six theatres, the Vista is the only survivor.
